I am currently trying to write an essay for a scholarship due on June 1st. Writing is something I can only do when I am in the mood, and I've written essays that have turned out very very bad because my muse was missing in action. But, I have random times when I really want to write. But usually, like what I did with college personal statements, when I have deadlines, I try to make myself get in the mood. I listen to music, try to find music that has deep meaning, and hopefully, a lightbulb will brighten my little brain of mine. It actually worked my senior year. I was listening to the song "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack, and put it on repeat. I can listen to a song fifty million times, because my memory sucks and can't memorize lyrics even if my life depended on it, so it takes me a while to get sick of a song. Anyways, one of the personal statement question was, How have you taken advantage of the educational opportunities given to you? I didn't want to write the same old generic essay everyone was writing, like about AP classes. I had writer's block, with notes filling the sides of my papers, but no strong idea emerging. I showered, and while in the shower, I was humming the song. Then, I remember the part in the song that goes something like..."You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger"...and ding, an idea hit me! I wrote my essay on how I was hungry for an education, how I wanted to digest the theories of Machiavelli, I was hungry for something more than bread, I was thirsty for the first theory of fundamental calculus...something like that, from what I can remember at the moment. My AP English Lit teacher liked it :D
So, this is why I always try to do something to get me in the mood. I am currently listening to classical music, which I do often too, and looking for quotes that I hope will get me thinking. I am also a collector of quotes I like, and used to have a journal filled with them before I lost it :'(
But here are a few I like that I just got right now. And it helps reading these. Helps me think of the big picture, and somehow get through life.
Don't be discouraged. It's often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock. ~Author Unknown
People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them. ~G.B. Shaw, Mrs. Warren's Profession, 1893
Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain. ~Author Unknown
When the world says, "Give up,"
Hope whispers, "Try it one more time."

Okay, time for me to go, and write, stop procrastinating right now, and find that inspiration to write my essay.
lol, I'm so lame. Is there anyone else who does odd things like this? Or am I the only one? I do a lot of very odd things.
