Conversations from my DREAM Act Button

I proudly wear my "I Support the DREAM Act" Button on my backpack. It's pretty cool to have it as a conversation starter with people I meet. I've gotten a mix of responses from it. Some look bored when I talk about the bill, some seem interested and would support it, some already know about it and are hard-core passionates like us, and some just don't get it, and ask, at the end of my explanation, "How much is this going to cost us?"

Worst conversation started: A guy from one of my classes ask me what the DREAM Act is. I tell him, and we are in a group. He laughs, looks at me like I'm crazy for supporting such a bill, and says, "Yeah, it would be nice if we could afford it." Then chuckles and makes a little comment to his friend standing next to him. I just hated the way he was looking at me, as if I were stupid.

Best conversations started: I was in the library, and a guy followed me out to ask me where I got my DREAM Act pin. He was excited, and wants to do more with the DREAM Act, and I also learned that he learned about this bill from being involved in the student government and a program called the Puente Project. Bumped into him a couple of times after that, and made a new friend :) Also, we are going to revive the AB 540 org in our school soon, and he wants to join :) yayy.

--I learned that the boy who gives me butterflies in the stomach supports the DREAM Act from this pin. I'm so glad he does, I don't think I could ever date anyone who doesn't support it. That is always something I fear. That I will like someone's personality, but that person doesn't like DREAM. This weekend, he even helped table and get petitions signed :) He says he can't see any valid arguments against this bill....Maybe I made a wrong choice, but I also opened up about my status to him one day...I wasn't going to tell him for at least another six months, but I don't know why something was telling me that now is safe. I don't know why I trust him so much after about a month of knowing him, but it just felt right this one moment we were having together. I don't regret it that he knows so far, and it is a relief.

Yay for DREAM Act buttons.
