For one second, let's forget what side we belong to in the immigration debate because that is not important right now. Whether you are for deconstructing the border or reinforcing the border, both sides can agree that it's time to find common ground between the two views because both sides should also consider how to support their claim validly. Both sides should consider that we as Americans always believe in humane treatment, and we are always looking for solutions to solve our problems that works for everyone. Therefore, any argument like people who chant "Deport them all" or "Immigrants are terrorists" have no valid reasoning or logic to back up what they are saying. Let's propose real solutions.
President Obama once said that "There is not a liberal America or a conservative America, there is only the United States of America." So don't say no to immigrants because you call yourself a conservative, or don't say yes to immigrants because you call yourself a liberal, but one should call on supporting humane immigration reform because we are Americans who believe in justice for all and equal opportunity for all. We believe the American Dream will be a reality to anyone who works hard for the dream. It's time to reward people with that dream we readily deserve. We should not be denied of a dream because of a lack of a nine-digit number. Isn't it ridiculous that a nine-digit number should rule one's life? Shouldn't our own actions and character and hard work determine our future instead of a nine-digit number that does not describe us in one bit at all?
This is why the DREAM Act makes sense for both Republicans and Democrats. The DREAM Act will allow undocumented immigrants who were brought here to the U.S. at a very young age a path to legalization. They have gone to American schools, and embrace American culture and respect what America stands for. We are intelligent people who have overcome great odds and will fight for our right to an education, and will fight for our right to use our degrees here in the U.S. because we want to contribute to the American economy. We love America that much that we would much rather use our B.S. degrees or PhD's here in America rather than elsewhere. We are high school students who don't want to see that the American Dream is not achievable for everyone, because we have been taught that dreams are always achievable. We are college students overburdened by the overwhelming costs, but yet, choose this hard path because education is too important to us. We are people who have not been given the dignity and chance that we deserve.
The Arguments against the DREAM Act do not make any sense and only try to instill fear in the American people. We're smarter than believing the lies and letting the fear become real.
FALSE CLAIM vs. the Real Answer.
THE DREAM ACT IS UNFAIR AND PROVIDES AMNESTY.
The real answer: We are being treated unfairly because we have done everything that America wanted us to do, yet we are not compensated for our actions. Therefore, this is not an amnesty. America wants our children to stay in school and finish a degree. We are doing that. Americans want us to stay out of trouble. We are doing that, in fact, the DREAM Act can't benefit anyone with a criminal record. Americans want us to participate in our democracy. We are doing that by fighting injustice. Americans want us to contribute positively to society. We are doing that when we are involved in organizations and educate the public about what is the right thing to do. America wants us to believe in our dreams and make them a reality. We are doing that.
America, it is now your turn to tell us: Yes, your dreams matter because believing in your dreams is the core American value. Yes, you are the doctor, lawyer, astronaut, scientist that you are qualified to be. Yes, you deserve to use your degree instead of resorting to menial jobs such as cleaning bathrooms, taking whatever job is out there. Yes, you deserve a chance because America does not believe in discrimination. Yes, we will invest in you just like you have invested in us.
It makes sense for everyone to support this. We relieve people of unnecessary pain and suffering, and with the current economic situation, this bill can only help our economy. Finally, high-skilled workers will finally be able to use their degrees and contribute in taxes. And what about the money we have already invested in us for a K-12 education? It will finally be put in good use instead of being wasted.
This is the solution we have been waiting for. Now all we need to do is support it. Visit http://www.change.org/ideas/932/view_action/ten_things_you_can_do_for_the_dream_act to see what you can do today to serve Americans.
